**Research

------------------------------------------------------------

* As global warming worsens, so may space communications
~~~~~~~~~~
Sporadic-E is a phenomenon that occurs in the ionosphere that can disrupt radio
communications. Through simulations, researchers have found that rising CO2 levels in our atmosphere could lead to sporadic-E becoming stronger, occur at lower altitudes, and persist longer at night.
* Controlling next-generation energy conversion materials with simple pressure
~~~~~~~~~~

Singlet fission (SF) offers a way to boost energy conversion in photosensitive materials by splitting energy from a single high-energy photon into two lower-energy excited states. In a recent study, researchers at Kyushu University developed a set of pressure-responsive SFactive molecules with flexible polar linkers. Their experiments revealed that adjusting pressure and changing the solvent can reversibly control SF rates, paving the way for advanced energy conversion materials and phototherapeutic applications.

* Parasitic matricide, ants chemically compel host workers to kill their own queen
~~~~~~~~~~
Researchers report on how two species of parasitic ants—Lasius orientalis and Lasius umbratus —invade and overtake a host ant colony. In both cases, the parasitic ant queen invades the nest and sprays the host colony queen with what is likely formic acid. This manipulates the host colony worker ants to attack and execute their own queen.
