*Streamlining construction of safer buildings
with Assoc. Prof. Shintaro Matsuo
~~~~~~~~~~
“Welding requires specialized skills and continuous training to
keep up with advances in construction materials, but anyone
can twist a bolt,” says Shintaro Matsuo, associate professor at
Kyushu University’s Faculty of Human-Environment Studies.
“Completely eliminating welding is unnecessary, but switching
some connections to high-quality bolts could greatly simplify
and speed-up construction.”
**Research
------------------------------------------------------------
*Nanobubbles offer green solution for inhibiting corrosion
~~~~~~~~~~
A team of Kyushu University researchers has found for the first time
that adding air nanobubbles less than 1 μm in diameter to acidic
geothermal water reduces corrosion of steel immersed in the water.

------------------------------------------------------------
*New cell source promising for treatment of liver diseases
~~~~~~~~~~
A new method developed by researchers at Kyushu University to
directly reprogram cells into progenitor cells capable of
producing two key cells in the liver could one day provide
a new source of cells for transplantation therapies for patients
with severe liver diseases.
*Feeding regimen could help reverse decline in Japanese black cattle
~~~~~~~~~~
Joint research led by Kyushu University could help increase
Japanese black cattle production through a change in feeding regimen.
Yutaka Taguchi, Dr. Yudai Inabu, and Dr. Hideyuki Takahashi have
found that feeding high volumes of milk replacer to female
Japanese black calves may improve their growth and reduce the age
they first give birth, potentially speeding up the rate cattle
can be produced.

*New ink jet approach offers simple way to print
microdisk lasers for biosensing
~~~~~~~~~~
Researchers have developed a unique inkjet printing method for
fabricating tiny biocompatible polymer microdisk lasers for
biosensing applications.
*The mathematics of sperm generation
~~~~~~~~~~
Researchers at Kyushu University have found a mathematical
model that can reproduce the spatial pattern of development
stages for sperm in vertebrates, providing a new tool for
studying the molecular circuitry of sperm formation and
understanding the origin of infertility.
