* In iron-dependent cell death, lysosome destabilization is key
~~~~~~~~~~
Ferroptosis, a form of programmed cell death mediated by iron, has been a focus for its potential in cancer therapies. Now, researchers have discovered that lysosomal lipid peroxidation plays a critical role in the execution of ferroptosis. They also showed that this leads to iron leakage from the lysosome, further promoting ferroptosis. Additionally, administration of chloroquine—a drug that promotes lysosomal membrane damage—facilitates ferroptosis in cancer cells that are less sensitive to the process.
* Enhanced activity in the upper atmosphere of Sporadic E layers during the 2024 Mother's Day super geomagnetic storm
~~~~~~~~~~

Researchers report on ionospheric sporadic E layer (Es) activity during the Mother's Day geomagnetic storm. The team found that the Es layers were significantly enhanced over Southeast Asia, Australia and South Pacific, as well as the eastern Pacific regions during the recovery phase of the geomagnetic storm. They also observed a propagation characteristic in the Es enhancement region wherein the clouds were first detected in high latitudes and detected successively in lower latitudes as time progressed.

* Scientists find the 'meow-tation' that gives cats their orange fur
~~~~~~~~~~
Scientists from Kyushu University have identified the long-sought "orange gene" behind ginger fur in domestic cats—a deletion mutation in a gene on the X chromosome. This discovery explains why most orange cats are male while tortoiseshell and calico cats are female, and reveals a new genetic mechanism for orange coloring. The study solves a decades-old mystery in feline genetics, with their findings published in Current Biology on May 15, 2025.
