**Research Close-Up

* Lighting the future with efficient renewable energy with Prof. Akari Hayashi
~~~~~~~~~~
“Advances in green technology are paramount to our future survival,
and renewable energy from sources such as the sun, wind, and waves are
excellent options,” explains Akari Hayashi, a professor at
Kyushu University's Platform of Inter-/Transdisciplinary Energy Research.
“However, these energy sources cannot always match demand,
so we need ways to store that energy. Rechargeable batteries work great for
the short term, and for long term storage, we can convert that energy into
hydrogen.”
Kyushu University has been a leader in hydrogen energy research,
and Hayashi’s world revolves around improving the very heart of
the technology itself: the electrocatalyst of the hydrogen fuel cell.
*SDGs Design International Awards 2021
Results Announcement
On October 16, 2021, the Award Ceremony for the SDGs Design International
Awards 2021 was held online.
This year, we called for design proposals that aim to achieve
“carbon neutrality”, which means reducing greenhouse gas emissions to
virtually zero. The theme was "Let's Create a Carbon-Neutral Society.
"〜Think big, Start small, Move fast〜".
This theme is one of the major global issues, and we received
many submissions from students worldwide.
**Research
------------------------------------------------------------
*Organics glow longer and stronger without depending on rare metals
~~~~~~~~~~
Applying a new strategy for combining carbon-based organic molecules,
researchers at Kyushu University and the Okinawa Institute of Science and
Technology (OIST) have dramatically improved the length and strength of
the glow produced by the versatile materials, which have the potential to
be more easily formed into paints and fibers than their rare-metal-containing
counterparts.

The new work builds off the research group’s discovery in 2017 of
the world’s first organic system for producing the glow-in-the-dark effect at
room temperature by melting together two metal-free molecules.

*Grasping the reality of addressing mental health issues arising from pandemic
~~~~~~~~~~
Life as we know it has been greatly disrupted by the coronavirus disease
(COVID-19) pandemic. However, while the acute threat of the disease to
physical health has rightfully taken center stage, the pandemic is
also taking a toll on another aspect of well-being: mental health.
Through a questionnaire survey of mental health and welfare centers and
psychiatric institutions in Japan, researchers led by Kyushu University
now have a clearer picture of the burden COVID-19 is putting on
mental health care facilities.
*Short training regimen improves long‑term memory
~~~~~~~~~~
In a paper published in Scientific Reports, researchers from
Kyushu University report that three sessions of brain-wave training over
the course of a week were enough to improve the ability of
study participants to recall information six days after first seeing it.

Brain-wave training is a method in which people train themselves to
increase specific electrical signals produced by the brain.
