* Support systems that relieve the strain of medical care and parenting
~~~~~~~~~~
For many researchers, inspiration doesn't just come from curiosity—it's born out of personal struggle and lived experience. Professor Shoko Miyauchi of the Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering is one such researcher. Motivated by the frustrations and anxieties she encountered during her own parenting experience, she has developed systems to support families with childcare needs. We sat down with Miyauchi to hear about her current research and future goals.
As local languages continue to disappear, Associate Professor Natsuko Nakagawa from the Faculty of Humanities is dedicated to documenting and preserving them while uncovering the linguistic principles hidden within. She also harnesses digital technology, collaborating closely with local communities to ensure the transmission of their language and culture. We spoke with Nakagawa about the allure of linguistics and the field of digital humanities.
* Uncovering the mechanism behind dual-end cleavage in transfer RNAs
~~~~~~~~~~

Precursor transfer RNAs (pre-tRNAs) are early forms of tRNAs that need precise trimming at both ends to become active for protein production. Bacteria and archaea use small enzymes called "HARPs" to achieve this cleavage, but how exactly this happens remains unclear. Now, researchers from Kyushu University have uncovered that HARPs form a star-shaped complex of 12 units, enabling it to perform both 5' and 3' end cleavages—conferring it "dual-functionality."

* Beetles under climate stress lay larger male eggs: Wolbachia infection drives adaptive reproduction strategy in response to rising temperature and CO₂
~~~~~~~~~~
The azuki bean beetle is a common pest of stored beans and peas. Researchers at Kyushu University have found that when beetles infected with Wolbachia bacteria are exposed to elevated temperature and carbon dioxide they tend to produce larger eggs to enhance the survivability of their offspring. Interestingly, these larger eggs gave rise only to male larvae.
