* Missing geomagnetic reversals in the geomagnetic reversal history
~~~~~~~~~~
An international research team, including Kyushu University and other institutions across Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the United States applied an adaptive-bandwidth kernel density estimation (AKDE) method to estimate reversal frequency while accounting for the uneven temporal spacing of events. The researchers identified four distinct dips in the new reversal frequency model following the Cretaceous Normal Superchron, which lasted from approximately 121 to 83 million years ago. This finding supports the interpretation that smoother, long-term variations more closely represent the underlying behavior of the geodynamo and suggests that the dips may contain missing reversals. The study provides promising candidates for future investigations and advances understanding of the long-term behavior of Earth’s magnetic field and the dynamics of the deep Earth.
* Gray screens and loading delays cut gaming time by 30%
~~~~~~~~~~

Excessive mobile gaming is raising concerns about health and sleep, but research from Kyushu University suggests that small changes can help. In a global study involving over 80,000 players, the team found that grayscale visuals and loading delays encourage users to reduce playtime naturally. When combined with a 10-second delay, grayscale reduced daily playtime by 30.8% and retention by 40.4%. The team calls on developers to adopt these insights to create healthier digital spaces.

* Researchers capture thermal fluctuations in polymer segments for the first time
~~~~~~~~~~
Polymer-based adhesives are essential for bonding lightweight materials used in transportation; however, how individual polymer chains behave at solid interfaces has remained unclear. In a recent study, researchers from Japan used atomic force microscopy to directly visualize the motions of individual segments in isolated polymer chains adsorbed on a solid surface. Their findings reveal new dynamics that challenge conventional assumptions of how polymers interact with surfaces, paving the way to innovative molecular design strategies.
* A new reagent makes living brains transparent for deeper, non-invasive imaging
~~~~~~~~~~

Real-time deep brain imaging can unlock new insights into how the brain works. Japanese researchers have developed SeeDB-Live, the first non-invasive optical clearing agent for living tissues. By adding albumin—a common blood protein—to the culture medium, the reagent renders tissue transparent without altering cellular functions, enabling observation of tissue-wide dynamics, including those in deep regions. Researchers hope the technique can contribute to both fundamental biological research and drug screening using living tissues.
