*Kyushu University holds Kyushu U 3MT Competition 2023 Award Ceremony

On Wednesday, October 4, 2023, the award ceremony for the Kyushu U Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition 2023 was held at Shiiki Hall, Ito Campus. This was the third time Kyushu University held its 3MT competition, a local version of an international competition where doctoral students present their research focus in just three minutes with only one slide.

*Kyushu University's 2023 Fall Commencement

On September 25, 2023, Kyushu University's 2023 Fall Commencement was held at Shiiki Hall, Ito Campus, conferring degrees to a total of 408 students (67 in the bachelor's program, 187 in the master's program, and 154 in the doctoral program).

*Strategic Design Department "Envisioning the Future of Humans and Birds” held
~~~~~~~~~~

On July 21st, at the Fukuoka City Zoo, a bilingual workshop titled "Envisioning the Future of Humans and Birds" was held for the general public. The workshop was a collaborative research effort between Assistant Professor Tokushu Inamura, Professor Yasuyuki Hirai and Professor Melanie Sarantou from the Department of Strategic Design, together with graduate students from the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London in the United Kingdom.

*Kyushu University's 2023 Fall Opening Ceremony
~~~~~~~~~~

On Monday, October 2, 2023, the Fall Opening Ceremony for the 2023 academic year and the Short-Term Study Abroad Program for Foreigners, Japan in Today's World (JTW) and Japanese Language and Culture Course (JLCC), were held at Shiiki Auditorium Hall, Ito Campus. We welcomed 455 new students, including 34 undergraduate students, 361 graduate students, and 60 students for JTW and JLCC.

*Investigating the role of greener plastics for Japan's carbon neutral goals

Japan has a plastic problem. Thanks in part to an overabundance of packaging, the country is the second largest producer of plastic waste per capita. Joint research between Kyushu University and Yokohama-based start-up company, Sotas Co., Ltd, has investigated the potential for Japan's market to incorporate a greener plastic supply chain.

*Converting brain immune cells into neurons helps mice recover after stroke
~~~~~~~~~~

Researchers at Kyushu University have discovered that turning brain immune cells into neurons successfully restores brain function after stroke-like injury in mice. These findings, published on October 10 in PNAS, suggest that replenishing neurons from immune cells could be a promising avenue for treating stroke in humans.

*A potentially cheaper and 'cooler' way of hydrogen transport
~~~~~~~~~~

In the continued effort to move humanity away from fossil fuels and towards more environmentally friendly energy sources, researchers in Japan have developed a new material capable storing hydrogen energy in a more efficient and cheaper manner. The new hydrogen energy carrier can even store said energy for up to three months at room temperature. Moreover, since the material is nickel based, its cost is relatively cheap.
