**Research Close-Up
------------------------------------------------------------
*Finding relationships through mathematics
with Prof. Masanobu Kaneko
~~~~~~~~~~
Exploration of various mathematical functions and
relationships between numbers themselves has raised
questions that have remained unsolved for generations—the
answers to which could unlock new discoveries. Masanobu Kaneko,
professor at Kyushu University’s Faculty of Mathematics,
has been searching for such answers related to
multiple zeta values, numbers produced by a distinct formula for
summing and multiplying integers out to infinity.
*EU Centre “Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence-Kyushu,
Second Stage Kick-off Symposium”
~~~~~~~~~~
On Wednesday, February 17, the EU Centre organized the
“Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence Kyushu-Second Stage
Kick-off Symposium” entitled “The Future of Brexit and
EU Integration” as an online webinar featuring leading
speakers on EU integration and European economic
research in Japan.

**Research
------------------------------------------------------------
*Startup to bridge basic research and commercialization of
organic electronics
~~~~~~~~~~
A group including scientists from Kyushu University’s Center
for Organic Photonics and Electronics Research (OPERA) has
launched a new company to support industry development of
state-of-the-art products through contract research by
leveraging knowledge and knowhow accumulated in the field of
organic photonics and electronics.
------------------------------------------------------------
*New technique reveals details of membrane structures
~~~~~~~~~~
A technique developed by researchers in Kyushu University's
Faculty of Science could shed new light on how cell membranes work
by helping to clarify the structure of so-called lipid rafts
found within them.

------------------------------------------------------------
*Making sense of commotion under the ocean to locate tremors
near deep-sea faults
~~~~~~~~~~
Researchers from Japan and Indonesia have pioneered a new method
that could help in the monitoring and understanding of large
earthquakes by more accurately estimating the source of weak
ground vibrations in areas where one tectonic plate is sliding under
another in the sea.
------------------------------------------------------------
*Molecular traffic key to keeping cellular highways maintained
~~~~~~~~~~
Researchers in Japan and France studying mixtures of the
biomaterials in the lab have discovered that biomolecular motors
wear down intracellular microtubule highways and that the damage is
fixed through a self-repair process.

------------------------------------------------------------
*Air pollutant reductions could enhance global warming without
greenhouse gas cuts
~~~~~~~~~~
As countries around the world race to mitigate global warming by
limiting carbon dioxide emissions, research from Kyushu University
shows that an unlikely source could be making climate goals
harder to achieve without even deeper cuts in greenhouse gas
production: reductions in air pollution.
------------------------------------------------------------
*Understanding adhesion, one molecule at a time
~~~~~~~~~~
Researchers from Kyushu University have succeeded in directly
observing the adhesion process for a single polymer chain on
a surface and changes to its configuration upon heating.
