* Kyushu University and University of Antwerp launch innovative joint degree program
~~~~~~~~~~
Kyushu University's Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences (IGSES) and the University of Antwerp's Faculty of Science in Belgium will launch a new joint degree program for doctoral students. The program, called the "Kyushu University-University of Antwerp International Collaborative Program in Engineering Science," will start in April 2025.
**Discover the Research
------------------------------------------------------------
* Understanding the mechanisms of environmental change caused by extraterrestrial impact events
~~~~~~~~~~

What caused the extinction of the dinosaurs? The first thing that might come to mind is a meteorite hitting into the Earth. Assistant Professor Honami Sato, a geologist at the Faculty of Science, studies impact-derived deposits to understand the mechanisms of environmental change on the Earth. We spoke with Sato about her research for the field work and also her fascination with geology.

*Unlocking the hidden potential of plants
~~~~~~~~~~
Plants produce organic compounds from surrounding inorganic matter, and in turn, animals—including humans—live off the organic matter that these plants create. We spoke to Professor Akiko Maruyama from the Faculty of Agriculture to learn more about the essential nutrients required by plants, which support life on Earth, and her fascination with plant science research.
*Keeping it together: How calcium signals help cells bury their dead neighbors
~~~~~~~~~~

Dying cells are typically expelled from epithelial sheets to prevent foreign substances and microorganisms from entering, but the mechanism underlying this process is unclear. A recent study by researchers from Japan has revealed a calcium-mediated mechanism essential for surrounding cells to expel an adjacent dying cell. Their findings clarify various aspects of this intricate process, which could enhance our understanding of epithelial pathologies such as atopic dermatitis and inflammatory bowel disease.

*Zebrafish as a model for studying rare genetic disease
~~~~~~~~~~
Nager syndrome (NS) is an extremely rare disease that causes developmental problems and anomalies in facial bone structures and limbs. While the causative gene is known, its underlying mechanisms remain obscure. Researchers from Japan employed genetically engineered zebrafish and found that the mutation in the gene that causes NS, suppresses the Fgf8 levels. This, in turn, affects the expression pattern of a critical cell population called neural crest cells in facial development.
*Uncovering new regulatory mechanisms in embryo implantation
~~~~~~~~~~

To build a suitable cellular environment for the implantation of a fertilized egg, endometrial stroma cells (ESCs) in the womb differentiate into decidual cells in a process known as decidualization. Researchers found that the actin in the ESC nucleus dynamically changes during this process, revealing a new critical mechanism that may contribute to better understanding and treatment of implantation failure.
