*Kyudai Students win Prizes in the First World Debating Championship

On February 28 - March 2, 2019, several students from Kyushu
University participated in the World Japanese Debate Championship
2019, held in National Chiao Tung Unversity, Taiwan and won many prizes.

At a ceremony on February 28 to award the 24th Nagoya Medal of
Organic Chemistry, Kyushu University’s Prof. Chihaya Adachi
received the silver medal.

Ceremony was held at SHIIKI HALL for 2,538 undergraduate students
and for 2,231 graduate students.

*Kyushu University secures 4th place in Japanese university ranking,
moving up for consecutive years(THE Japan University Rankings 2019)

The Times Higher Education (THE) Japan University Rankings 2019,
released on 27 March, placed Kyushu University 4th out of about 760
institutions of higher education in Japan.

Toshihiko Takemura, Research Institute for Applied Mechanics,
Kyushu University, and Kentaroh Suzuki, Atmosphere and Ocean
Research Institute, University of Tokyo clearly showed that
the global surface air temperature change due to the energy
imbalance (termed “radiative forcing”) strongly depends on
chemical components of aerosols.

*Successful Gold Leaching from a Gold Ore Using Bacteria Isolated
from a Natural Gas Field

Assoc. Prof. Yuichi Sugai, Prof. Kyuro Sasaki and PhD candidate Ms. San
Yee Khaing who belong to the faculty of engineering in Kyushu University
succeeded in leaching gold from a gold ore using bacteria isolated from
a natural gas field.
