Unveiled on October 19 by President Chiharu Kubo at Kyushu U’s
Academic Festival 2019, the new slogan was decided using input
from students, faculty, staff, and alumni through a contest that
received 752 entries, which then underwent several rounds of
internal judging.

*Trans fats linked to increased risk of dementia

The study found that people with higher levels of trans fats in
their blood were 50 to 75 percent more likely to develop Alzheimer’s
disease or dementia years later than people with lower levels of
trans fats in their blood.

*Unleashing immune cells to fight cancer:
A possible new path to cancer immunotherapy using non-antibody-type
inhibitors found

In a study published online by Cancer Immunology, Immunotherapy
on September 27, researchers at Kyushu University reported that
targeting a protein called PTPN3 may provide a path to finding
such an inhibitor.

*Mapping radioactive microparticles:
Quantification of cesium-rich microparticle distribution provides
new insights

Applying an original method to quantify specific radioactive
particles in soil, a team led by Satoshi Utsunomiya, associate
professor of Kyushu University’s Department of Chemistry,
has constructed the first quantitative map of cesium-rich
microparticles around the power plant at the center of the nuclear
disaster following the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011,
providing an important tool for understanding how such particles spread.
