**Research Close-Up

* Materializing the future of energy with Prof. Yoshihiro Yamazaki
~~~~~~~~~~
“Among the uncountable number of materials yet to be explored are ones that
will dramatically reduce the environmental burden of energy use,”
says Yoshihiro Yamazaki, professor of the Kyushu University Platform of
Inter-/Transdisciplinary Energy Research. Applying artificial intelligence to
accelerate the search for these materials, Yamazaki and his group are
making advances in a class of materials known as inorganic perovskites
in their effort to realize a clean-energy society sooner than later.
**Topics
------------------------------------------------------------
*Learning and connecting through debate
~~~~~~~~~~
Kyushu University students interacted and learned with students from
around Asia at the 10th International Japanese Debate Course held online
from August 22 to 29, 2021.

*Kyushu U joins Association of Pacific Rim Universities
~~~~~~~~~~
In March 2021, Kyushu University became a member of the Association of
Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), a network of leading universities
linking the Americas, Asia and Australasia. APRU was established in
1997 to strengthen cooperation in higher education for
the Asia-Pacific Region and work together with thought leaders, researchers,
and policy-makers to exchange ideas and collaborate on effective solutions to
the challenges of the 21st century.
*Kyushu U's 3MT finalist participates in Asia-Pacific competition
~~~~~~~~~~
On Friday, October 1, 2021, the award ceremony for the Kyushu University
3MT Competition 2021 was held at the Shiiki Hall on the Ito Campus.
The 3MT Competition is an international competition in
which PhD students present their research in English
in three minutes using only one slide. It started in 2008 at
the University of Queensland (Australia), one of our partner universities,
and has become a well-known and highly regarded competition.

**Research

------------------------------------------------------------
*In the race to reduce car emissions, don't forget longevity
~~~~~~~~~~
A new study of car use in Japan shows that, even with gasoline vehicles,
keeping and using cars with good fuel efficiency longer could reduce
CO2 emissions significantly more than an accelerated transition to
alternative fuel vehicles.
“The faster you replace a car, the more CO2 it emits.
It’s no different with electric cars, because when the demand for
new cars increases, it shoots up manufacturing emissions,”
says Shigemi Kagawa, professor of Kyushu University's Faculty of
Economics and leader of the study.
------------------------------------------------------------
*Low-cost, continuous seismic monitoring system to support
emission reduction efforts
~~~~~~~~~~
Kyushu University researchers demonstrated a new method for
continuously monitoring the environment just below Earth's surface using
a small seismic source and fiber-optic cables.
Accurate and frequent measurements of changes in the ground enabled by
the system can aid in the safe and efficient implementation of measures to
fight climate change such as carbon storage and geothermal energy generation.
“Storing captured carbon dioxide underground and generating electricity from
geothermal energy are two important technologies for
reducing greenhouse gases,” says Takeshi Tsuji, lead author of
the study published in Scientific Reports.
