**Topics

------------------------------------------------------------
*Tackling resource depletion and creating jobs through circular economy
~~~~~~~~~~
“A circular economy is about optimization of resources, not wastemanagement,”
says Scott Valentine, Professor and Director of Research Promotion at
the Kyushu University Institute for Asian and Oceanian Studies (Q-AOS)
and chair of the Australian Circular Economy Hub Advisory Board.
For Valentine and his team, a circular economy embraces design for
disassembly, repair businesses of all types and sharing of idle resources
to help meet sustainability goals.
Such practices from Australia, Denmark, and the Netherlands
and how they can be applied in Japan were the topic of a full-day international
seminar on October 25 organized by Valentine as part of Kyushu U Asia Week 2021.
*Kyushu U 29th in QS Asia University Rankings 2022
~~~~~~~~~~
In the QS Asia University Rankings 2022 announced on November 2,
Kyushu University has moved up to 29th from 31st last year.
Among 108 Japanese higher education institutions, Kyushu University placed 7th.

**Research

------------------------------------------------------------
*New multistep mechanism for nanostructure formation found in liquid crystals
~~~~~~~~~~
Researchers from Kyushu University and the National Institute of
Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) have developed
a novel analysis method that combines molecular simulation and
artificial intelligence (AI) to observe the formation process of
nanostructures in cooling liquid crystals. In doing so,
they discovered a new three-step process of nanostructuring
unexplainable by classical nucleation theory and also clarified its mechanism.
------------------------------------------------------------
*Twenty-four trillion pieces of microplastics in the ocean and counting
~~~~~~~~~~
In the Age of Exploration, scientists sailed across the oceans to
discover indigenous flora and fauna in faraway lands. Today,
scientists are sailing the world's open seas equipped with a tow
net and flowmeter to sample microplastics.

Now, a global team of oceanographers led by Kyushu University's
Atsuhiko Isobe has calibrated and processed data from these
expeditions to build a publicly available dataset for more accurately
assessing the abundance of microplastics—and their long-term
trends—in the world’s oceans.

“Our dataset provides realistic amounts of microplastics in the wild to
help researchers trying to assess the true impact they are having on
aquatic organisms and the environment,” says Isobe.
