*Barrier ahead? No problem for DNA replication
~~~~~~~~~~
Researchers from Kyushu University have reported in the Journal
of Cell Biology a new pathway for the DNA replication process to
overcome such obstacles induced when DNA is tightly bound by proteins,
giving new understanding about how our cells maintain genome stability
in ‘difficult-to-replicate’ regions such as those found at the tips and
linking points of chromosomes.

*Life arrives at same solution using different molecular approaches

In a study that could provide a clue to the origin of life,
an international team of researchers in Japan and the USA have
elucidated interactions between proteins and transfer RNA and found
that two completely different molecular species came to develop similar
mechanisms.

Collaborative research involving Kyushu University has shown
for the first time that inflammatory cells infected with
periodontitis-causing bacteria could be a source located outside of
the brain of protein fragments associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Using a new combination of emitter molecules, researchers in Japan
have demonstrated the promise of a novel approach to finally
overcome a major challenge facing displays using organic light-emitting

*Mechanism connects epilepsy and enzyme deficiency

Researchers from Kyushu University’s Medical Institute of Bioregulation
in collaboration with Nihon University, Yasuda Woman’s University,
and Nagoya University now report a better understanding of a mechanism
causing epilepsy in infants as the result of a deficiency of an enzyme
known as inosine triphosphatase, or ITPA.

*Which came first, sleep or the brain?

In a study that could help to understand the evolutionary origin of
sleep in animals, researchers at Kyushu University in Japan
and Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology in Korea have
shown that tiny, water-dwelling hydras not only show signs of a
sleep-like state despite lacking central nervous systems but also
respond to molecules associated with sleep in more evolved animals.
